Customized Degrees for Tulsa Businesses
Employees of the Bama Companies Inc are the beneficiaries of an educational partnership with Tulsa Community College and their employer. Bama encourages its people to enroll in classes that lead to either a certificate of achievement or an associate degree. Many of Bama’s workers take Microsoft product courses at TCC’s Northeast Campus, which are taught by both TCC and Bama staff. In addition to the classes taught on campus, TCC’s Continuing Education Department trains Bama’s people in non-credit management, communications, and customer service strategy sessions at the College’s Conference Center. The company demonstrates its commitment to an educated workforce by ensuring the employees are able to balance their work and class schedules. TCC also facilitates the students’ enrollment by directly billing Bama for their tuition. The partnership between the Bama Companies and TCC continues to build a better workforce, benefiting both the employees and their employer.
Saint Francis Hospital employees are stepping into a Tulsa Community College classroom minutes after leaving their desks. A program of accelerated courses, taught on-site at the hospital, allows students to earn a Healthcare Administration associate degree from TCC in as little as 18 months. The program teaches students the administrative skills to improve their careers as well as providing formal training in business operations for the hospital’s supervisors. In addition to general education courses, the curriculum tackles healthcare administration issues such as risk management, medical and legal issues, financial accounting, business math, human resources and marketing. Although most courses are taught at the hospital, students may take some courses online. The partnership between Saint Francis and TCC began almost 20 years ago and continues as an example of the College’s commitment to serving the business community.
Employees at Visteon Glass (formally Ford Glass), a manufacturer of automobile windshields, are taking advantage of TCC’s on-site Learning Resource Center to earn a Computer User Certificate, pursue an associate degree, or check the value of their stock portfolio without leaving their work place. The ten-year-old program, jointly funded by Visteon and the United Auto Workers Union, brings TCC instructors to the LRC and Visteon’s employees. The instructors teach classes as well as tutor students enrolled in online courses. Students use the LRC’s computers throughout the day – during lunch breaks and before and after their work shift. One student who learned to create a Web site for his part-time business said “I didn’t know how to use a FAX machine much less a computer before taking the classes.” In 1996, the UAW-Ford joint governing body selected the program for the “Annual Rise Award” (Recognition of Innovation Support and Excellence) from more than 50 plants that had educational programs in place.
Cherokee Nation Enterprises (CNE) has partnered with TCC to create a degree program focused on creating a skilled workforce for the hospitality and gaming sectors. The partnership, first formed in 2004, has continued to grow and develop as curriculum for TCC’s new Business – Hospitality and Gaming Operations program has been developed. The partnership has included an Executive Interaction Committee to determine the workforce and education needs of this emerging Oklahoma industry, commitment of CNE time and resources in curriculum development, recruitment and development of part-time instructors for the program, development of an advisory committee made up of industry professionals for the degree and certificate program, and development of incentives for CNE employees to enroll in classes and further their educations at Tulsa Community College. In addition, CNE has partnered with TCC’s Corporate Learning Center to assist with the development and implementation of a Leadership Academy geared toward identifying and developing future leaders of the Cherokee Nation. TCC’s Corporate Learning Center also provides staff development opportunities to help the Cherokee Nation Enterprises training department provide well-balanced options to its employees.
