Walch Center For Business Development

Walch Center for Business Development (CBD)

Located on the Alva campus, the Walch Center for Business Development operates under the Northwestern Oklahoma State University system. The CBD provides assistance through its network of rich resources that are conducive to business development and expansion, entrepreneurial activities and rural economic development actions. As a major player in regional economic development, the CBD works closely with various agencies, partners, and alliances to foster northwest Oklahoma and the state.

The CBD’s primary network includes the NWOSU Business Incubator, the Northwest Oklahoma Professional Development Center, the Small Business Institute®, and Career Services. Qualified and experienced faculty and staff provide one-on-one counseling to assist entrepreneurs and small business owners in the following areas.  

  • Entrepreneurship

  • Strategic plans
  • Market analysis
  • Workforce development
  • Marketing plans
  • Business management
  • Customer service
  • Business development, retention and expansion

Professional Development and Continuing Education

The Northwest Oklahoma Professional Development Center (PDC) provides professional development and continuing education through various delivery systems to enhance educational level, upgrade skills, and meet workforce needs for professionals, communities, adults lifelong learners, and college students in the northwest Oklahoma region. The PDC offers assistance through the following means.

  • Non-credit Classes
  • Workshops
  • Seminars and Webinars
  • Off-site and On-site training

As the PDC addresses the regional needs of professionals in rural northwest Oklahoma, it serves as a local provider and location for lifelong learners. This focus has a direct impact on local economies and communities who rely on an educated and trained workforce.

NWOSU Business Incubator

The NWOSU Business Incubator serves northwest Oklahoma entrepreneurs and small businesses by providing a professional environment and quality resources in a university setting conducive for business start-up and expansion. The business incubator is certified by the Oklahoma Department of Commerce and a member of the National Business Incubator Association.

Within the Business Incubator, the Student Incubator provides additional opportunities for NWOSU students to start their own businesses while attending the university. All incubator clients have access to the following resources.

  • Affordable office space with flexible leases
  • Access to business experts
  • Assistance with business plans, financing, marketing, and accounting
  • Exposure to critical business support services and agencies
  • Shared office services and equipment
  • High speed Internet access
  • Technical support
  • State income tax exemption

Small Business Institute®  

A nationally-recognized program, the Small Business InstituteŽ (SBIŽ) serves as a mechanism to assist entrepreneurs, small businesses, and not-for-profit organizations by utilizing senior-level students as student consultants. Students enroll in the program as a college credit course and work in teams to evaluate, research, and/or analyze the organization. Under the guidance of the SBI director, the SBI team meets with the client and prepares a final report with recommendations to the SBI client. Areas of focus may include the following.

Career Services

The Career Services staff offers assistance to undergraduate students and alumni of Northwestern Oklahoma State University as well as local job seekers. Employers may register electronically to post job openings. Job seekers may also post resumes electronically through our system. Our trained and experienced staff provides professional support in career exploration, job search, interview skills, and resume writing. Services include the following.

  • Employment postings
  • On-campus interviews with potential employers
  • Career and teacher fairs
  • Counseling regarding career opportunities and employment/industry trends
  • Services to help students identify aptitudes and enhance employability
  • Use of the DISCOVER for Adult Learners program for career planning nterpretation
